First impressions matter, and your first day of class sets a tone for the rest of the semester. In addition, research demonstrates that building a student’s sense of belongingness is key to their academic success. So how can we, as classroom leaders and facilitators, ensure our students' first impression of class makes them feel welcome, engaged, and empowered to learn?

Participants in this workshop will:

  • Explore strategies for engaging students starting on the first day of class;
  • Consider how to begin building meaningful connections with and among students; and
  • Review course expectations and requirements through a lens of equity and inclusion.

Through hands-on activities, you will learn how to set expectations and begin creating an inclusive classroom community starting on day one.
