Research Mentor Training: IntegSci 660 Summer22 Section 2

Explore strategies to become a more effective, culturally responsive mentor, and discuss mentoring challenges as they arise. This session will be held in-person on campus.

Dates & Times: 10 weeks, Wednesdays, 9:00am – 10:00 am, May 25 – July 27
Location: Room 110 (WISCIENCE) in 445 Henry Mall
Facilitator: Alissa Ewer & Rachel Hutchinson
Credits: 1 unit (INTEG SCI 660; must be mentoring a trainee during the summer for credit)
Satisfies prerequisite toward the Delta Certificate: Δ (1 delta)

Mentor training can make the difference between a mutually beneficial and productive mentoring relationship and one that is draining for the mentor and discouraging for the mentee. Research Mentor Training, based on a nationally-recognized curriculum, gives you space to reflect and reinvigorate and provides concrete tools to support a successful mentor/mentee relationship. The curriculum is designed for graduate students, postdocs, and senior undergraduates who are mentoring an undergraduate researcher. The seminar can be taken for one credit of IntegSci 660 or no credit (for-credit option requires having a mentee).

  • Explore multiple strategies for effective mentoring with case studies, discussions, and readings
  • Compare mentor and mentee goals, and craft a statement of your mentoring philosophy
  • Explore time-management strategies, and discuss relevant issues as they come up
  • Collaborate and problem-solve with a group of colleagues
