Discussions can engage learners in deeper thinking, foster community, and promote student motivation. In this workshop, graduate students and postdocs will develop a toolbox to design classroom discussions and facilitate learning communities.

Discussions can engage learners in deeper thinking, foster community, and promote student motivation. In this workshop, you will develop a toolbox to design classroom discussions and facilitate learning communities, now or in your future career. We will explore approaches, build skills, and consider practical applications for synchronous discussions. Questions addressed may include:

  • What are your goals for discussion?
  • How can discussions be structured and adapted for different contexts?
  • How can you get all students participating and keep things on track?
  • And, how do you assess what students are learning?

Through hands-on experiences, you will leave with a set of strategies for creating effective, inclusive discussions that support a collaborative learning environment.
