Evidence-Based Teaching: Finding and Using the Literature to Avoid Pitfalls and Do It Well

Registration is closed for this event
Don't reinvent the wheel! Designed for busy instructors, participants will learn how to efficiently find information to use student-centered teaching approaches well, address a 'sticking point' in your course that students are finding challenging, and more.

Are there concepts in your course that you think could be taught in a more effective way? Are you wanting to avoid pitfalls and use best practices for a new teaching approach? There’s no need to reinvent the wheel: many other educators have faced the same challenges and have since found solutions. This workshop will cover where to search, what search terms to use, and what types of questions to ask to help you build evidenced-based lesson plans for your classroom. We'll consider both peer reviewed, scholarly literature and web resources that summarize best practices for busy instructors.

Participants will need to have available a laptop or tablet*, as well as a learning challenge, question or teaching approach they are interested in. This might be the best practices for an activity you are considering, finding an assessment for a course unit you're teaching, or understanding why a particular concept seems so challenging for students.

Using the educational research literature is part of the Teaching-As-Research process, and this workshop is highly recommended for those considering a Delta Internship.

* For on-site (in-person) offerings, we are happy to provide loaned laptop or tablets if notified before the workshop. Please let us know by contact info@delta.wisc.edu
