Writing Learning Outcomes that Drive Instruction

Registration is closed for this event
Effective teaching is driven by the intended result: How can you focus your content and aim for significant, interconnected learning? This workshop offers a hands-on approach to drafting measurable, student-centered learning outcomes for your teaching, conference talks, departmental seminars or other learning contexts.

Description

Effective (/əˈfektiv/) adjective: Successful in producing a desired or intended result.

Effective teaching is driven by the intended result: How can you focus your content and aim for significant, interconnected learning? Make sure your students attain the skills they need. Creating student-centered learning outcomes that are realistic and measurable is the foundation of instructional design and can be challenging for all educators. In this workshop, we reference Bloom's Taxonomy and will also introduce Fink’s Taxonomy of Significant Learning to integrate affective outcomes such as motivation and interest.

Please bring at least one learning outcome related to a class or topic you are currently teaching or you may want to teach in the future

Well structured learning outcomes can also drive successful conference talks, departmental seminars, and staff training. Participants will leave with revised learning outcomes, and practice writing effective learning outcomes.

What did past participants say about this workshop?

  • “As someone who is very new to improving my skills as an educator, the workshop was incredibly accessible. The instructor managed our time very well, and I learned a great deal!”
  • “It helped me understand how important is to have clear outcomes in a class and the way I have to express them (Bloom´s and Fink´s taxonomy).”
  • “I walked away from this session feeling like I had new evidence-based skills and practices that could improve the quality of learning for my students.”

Learning outcomes are part of the Teaching-As-Research (TAR) process, and this workshop is highly recommended for those considering a Delta Internship.
