You’re smart and you’re passionate about your field, but it took a deep interest in the subject to keep you engaged in this path. Not all of the students you will teach will have the same level of interest that you do. How do you help them develop enough interest to engage them? How do you do so while protecting your own time?
This course is for graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and staff who want to teach better and easier by harnessing learning technologies in their practice. The course helps you navigate ever-changing instructional technologies by equipping you with a solid foundation in the learning sciences, with strategies to teach well but also have time for life balance. No prior teaching or technology experience is required.
In this course, we will explore how effective use of learning technologies can support good learning — and make good teaching easier. We'll experiment with and evaluate educational technologies, explore effective uses, and dig more deeply into those that resonate with you. We'll consider broad topics such as learning theory, cognition and motivation, active and social learning, Universal Design for Learning, flipped learning, and effective teaching practices. We’ll also explore tools to enable good learning, such as videos, interactive media, screencasting, games and simulations, online discussions, and others. You will leave this course having designed and built a blended course in Canvas, in your subject area.
Will this course be held if fall courses are only online? Yes. We are trying to offer this information for every Fall 2020 course, so that you know what to expect.
